Wellesbourne Wartime Museum

Museum | Warwick | England | United Kingdom

The Wellesbourne Wartime Museum is located at the historic Wellesbourne Mountford Airfield in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, England. It was opened in 1991 and is dedicated to the history of the airbase during World War II.

Collections and Exhibitions:

Aircraft: The museum houses various aircraft exhibits, including the cockpits of a de Havilland Sea Vixen FAW.2 and a de Havilland Vampire T.11. These exhibits provide insight into aviation technology of the time.

Avro Vulcan B.2: An outstanding exhibit is the Avro Vulcan B.2, a strategic bomber that was in service during the Cold War. The aircraft is maintained by the 655 Maintenance & Preservation Society and is in an operational condition, allowing occasional public taxi runs.

Underground Bunker: A unique feature of the museum is the underground bunker, originally used as an air raid shelter during World War II. This bunker is now accessible to visitors and offers an authentic glimpse into wartime.

Special Features:

The museum is located at Wellesbourne Mountford Airfield, a former RAF base opened in 1941 and used as a training center for bomber crews during World War II. Today, the site is an active airfield used for general aviation and hosts annual events such as the "Wings and Wheels" event, featuring historical aircraft and vehicles.

The Wellesbourne Wartime Museum provides a comprehensive insight into the history of the airbase and aviation technology during World War II and beyond.

Came for the first time with the family. We all loved it. Even my 13 year old daughter loved everything. Definitely will be recommending to friends and family. When my lancaster gets finished maybe you can hang it with your other models 👌

A lovely little museum. A very knowledgeable staff member was engaging and friendly. Fascinating to be able to go down into an original control bunker. The kids very much appreciated and enjoyed being able to sit in the vampire.

Popped in while visiting the airfield cafe. Had a wonderful experience. Will certainly be going back again and very much enjoyed the explanation of the museum by a member of the preservation group.

Really enjoyed my time at this museum, the museum curators have preserved a huge chunk of the local history of the airfield from during wartime. Most of the aircraft cockpits are open allowing for access to view the instruments and interiors, with some of the nose cones also being open. The staff working at the museum are incredibly friendly, and eager to share the history of the airfield and chat about the aircraft on display. Thoroughly enjoyed my time talking with the staff and looking at the exhibits.

Great museum, a very comprehensive collection of local & national wartime exhibits & really informative staff/volunteers. Cafe is also good and a lovely spot to watch planes take off and land. Our kids loved it but worth a visit for anyone passing through or with an interest.

This is a lovely little gem of a local museum. Only £5 quid for us and the two kids it is a total bargain. It is open on Sundays and bank holidays and is totally staffed by volunteers. The same volunteers look after and maintain the aircraft and are happy to stop their tinkering and talk to you about the collection. There are several wartime aircraft that you can get very close to indeed and the original wartime bunker you can walk down into. There is also a little exhibition with wartime items and aircraft components that again you can get very close to. For locals, there is a lot of reference to local people and communities, including the wasperton air craft crash landing. Will definitely be going back.

Nice to see some old British world beating warbirds out in the sticks, pity you can't visit them up close, it's only open 3 times a year but I'm pleased they're there. Maybe next time folks... Here's a sample..
